The Best Haircuts For Every Face Shape (Women’s Edition)

For many of us, our haircut ideas and inspirations come from the red carpet or a runway. But all too often, we leave a hair salon wondering if we’ve made the right call. From “why did this fringe look so much better on Dakota Johnson” to “how did Kylie manage to rock this blunt bob that I look awful in”—we’ve all been there and regretted a few of our hair choices.

But it’s important to remember that both Dakota and Kylie have some of the best stylists at their beck and call, who tell them exactly what would look good on them. And you can have that too! We’ll be your glam squad and guide you toward the best choices, starting with the ideal haircuts for your face shape.

Here’s what our top hairstylists suggest!

Oblong Faces—A Soft Layered Cut With Curtain Bangs

This is also known as a rectangular shape, and people with oblong faces typically have a sharp jaw and forehead, which you’d want to soften with a layered cut. The idea is to keep the cut short to avoid further elongating the face, but the layers should ideally keep the corners semi-covered while enhancing the cheekbones.

Also, to add a horizontal effect, it’s a good idea to throw in some curtain bangs or rounded fringes.

Round Faced—Long Layers with A Short Side Fringe

Round faces tend to be symmetrical, meaning they’re the same width and length and feature a rounded chin and jawline. Any cut or style should ideally be geared toward elongating the face to create a more oval appearance. So, it’s best to stay away from shorted cuts and try and go for one length.

Any layers added to the mix should start after the jawline, and a side fringe finishing at eye level should help tie the look together.

Heart-Shaped Faces—Side-Swept Cuts, Bobs and Pixie Cuts

Heart-shaped faces are sometimes confused with round ones, but they do have distinct differences. These faces usually have larger foreheads, prominent cheekbones, and narrow chins that create the “heart” shape.

The haircut you choose needs to balance the face shape by covering the brow width and adding to the lower-face width. This can easily be done with layers starting from below the ears—this will add visual volume to the lower half of your face. Alternatively, a side-swept pixie cut or a bob, or a lob can be used to frame a heart-shaped face to make it appear more balanced.

These are some of the most common face shapes that we’ve covered, but if you have a face shape that isn’t highlighted here, or if you’re not sure what your face shape is exactly—let us help you out.
